The Whanganui River at the turn of the twentieth century is a busy thoroughfare, taking sightseers through the spectacular landscape by paddle steamer and acting as highway for the sparse scatterings of settlements along its twisting length. The people who have made it their home are a diverse collection, from Samuel Blencoe, trying to forget his past life as a convict, to the hoteliers at Pipiriki, the nuns at Jerusalem, the Maori families, the Chinese market gardener and the farmers, like Danny and Stella, trying to tame the wild bush. There's also Bridie, the strange, silent girl, who haunts the banks of the river where the accident occurred that robbed her of her mind. Like the tributaries that trickle down the mountains and join the mighty river, so the lives of these people come together in this vivid and moving tale of a stunningly unique place.

Landings by Jenny Pattrick.I enjoyed this book as Jenny is a New Zealand writer and her storys are all set in early New Zealand. I have been writing about my 2xGreat Grandparents and what life was like for them when they arrived in Nelson in the South Island of N.Z in 1842.for my children.and Grandchilren I have read so many history books which can at times be quite boring as they are all facts. Her books have helped me understand more about what it was like in different areas in the 1800s .The book that is still my favourite of hers was Denniston Rose.Product details

I don't want this but try and cancel. Don't mess with digital.
An enjoyable read. Looked forward to getting back to it each evening.
A fascinating way to be introduced to the area of NZ that I was to visit recently. Local history with a sympathetic story added to cultural awareness.
Loved this book just as I have all of Jenny Pattricks novels. She transports you back to New Zealand of old in a very entertaining way.
Having spent time staying on the Whanganui River, it was exciting and interesting to learn the history of it. I had heard it was a world wide tourist destination in another century - so to read about that was wonderful. It is truly a special, beautiful place. Jenny Patrick weaved the history of the area in with a wonderful story of families and life of the area back in it's heyday.
